Ian Small

It is with great sadness that we learned of the death of popular member Ian Small, who passed away on Monday 29th October.

Ian enjoyed acting and directing all his life. He was President of the Oxford University Dramatic Society as well as being Head of Drama at Stowe School, where he played Nathan Detroit, Ali Hakim and several Gilbert and Sullivan roles, as well as directing over thirty productions. He became Headmaster of Bootham School in 1988. After moving to York, he directed and appeared in several productions for York Opera as well as being their Chairman.

Ian joined York Light in 2008 when he played Colonel Pickering in the company’s production of ‘My Fair Lady’. He went on to act as the Narrator in ‘Beauty and the Beast’ and ‘The Likes of Us’, as well as Honoré in Gigi. Ian was a gentle man as well as a gentleman. He generously gave his time to help coach and develop the acting skills of younger members and always with patience, encouragement and good humour. He will be sadly missed as a regular performer on the York stage as well as by his friends in the company.

About York Light Youth!

York Light Youth is the Youth Branch of York Light that focuses on theatrical productions for 11 to 18 year-olds.
Established in July 2013, our aim is to nurture and develop young performers aged 11-18 who share our passion for musical theatre by providing them with the opportunity to take part in high quality musical productions. York Light Youth members who are 16+ are also invited to perform in the main shows at The York Theatre Royal.
We have an experienced Director, Musical Director and Choreographer spearheading the creative side and YLY is supported by the main York Light Opera Company Management Team.

As well as putting on an annual show, York Light Youth also has its own choir which meets regularly throughout the year and performs in the annual Choir Festival at Joseph Rowntree theatre, at York's St Sampson's Centre, and other concerts in York.
